** Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda Relief
------------------------------------------------------------

Dear friends,

We have already received from a number of you expressions of
solidarity with Filipinos who are now going through a period of
tragedy as a result of super typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan. We thank you for
this and for your offer of help. We know that time is of the essence,
as many victims have not eaten or received water or changed clothes
for days now since Yolanda wrought destruction in many Philippine
provinces. One terrible reality that some of our allies now face is
the uncertainty of the whereabouts and condition of their community
members in affected areas; communications systems are still down and
many inner towns inaccessible. Setting up a system of relief delivery
has been a challenge, but many non-government and people’s
organizations have started efforts to overcome the problems. Focus on
the Global South in the Philippines is helping to channel
contributions to Pambansang Koalisyon ng mga Kababaihan sa Kanayunan
(PKKK/National Rural Women Coalition) and the Institute
for Strategic Research and Development Studies of the Visayas State
University (VSU-ISRDS).

The PKKK is a coalition of grassroots organizations and federations of
associations of women peasants, fisher folk, farm workers, and
indigenous peoples; including rural women in the sectors of informal
labor, elderly, youth, and persons with disabilities in more than 50
provinces. PKKK has nine major themes for its campaigns and advocacy:
fulfilling and advancing rural women’s rights in agrarian reform,
ancestral domains, coastal resources; access to safe and adequate
food, potable water, and basic services; access to sustainable and
women-friendly agriculture and fishery support services;
representation and participation in the implementation of
gender-oriented and development programs and local sectoral
representation; promotion of reproductive rights; protection from all
forms of violence and other oppressive gender relations; a rural
women’s peace agenda, especially in Mindanao; and protection from
impacts of climate change and right to safe environment. VSU-ISRDS is a
public research institution that works on development issues such as
water, land, women, climate change and extractive industry. It
provides non-formal education, capacity building and extension work
with various communities in the country, especially in the Visayas and
Mindanao regions. Located in Baybay, Leyte, one of the
typhoon-stricken areas, ISRDS is directly doing relief operations and
mobilization in affected communities in Leyte.

For those who wish to send financial assistance to the people of
Leyte, Samar and other affected provinces, we have put together a list
of allied organizations active in these regions that you may wish to
contact or directly donate your money to. You may also course these
funds through us by depositing to our Philippines, Thailand or India
accounts, or via Paypal at http://focusweb.org/content/donations and
inform us by sending email to give at focusweb.org
(mailto:give at focusweb.org) . Focus will not be taking any
administrative or other fees and 100% of the funds we receive will go
towards the three organizations listed above. Sorry, but donations
made through Focus on the Global South are not tax-deductible. For
more information please email or contact Lyn Cacho-dela Cruz at
lyn at focusweb.org (mailto:lyn at focusweb.org) / +63 2 433 1676.

The solidarity and concern that peoples and communities across the
globe have shown have been a great source of strength for Filipinos.
In solidarity with the Filipino people, we in Focus on the Global
South, apart from immediate relief efforts, are more persistent than
ever in our demands for climate justice, as developed nations continue
to refuse to acknowledge the devastating impacts of climate change. We
need real and deep cuts in carbon emissions now, with binding
commitments from all major greenhouse gas emitters.
