Vienna+20 at Vienna: A week of human rights action

Vienna+20 – an action week: The Vienna+20 Coordinating Committees draw 
the attention of civil society organizations and other experts to the 
Vienna+20 conferences and special events on June 24-28, 2013. In this 
context CSOs will address current challenges for human rights, 
evaluate the implementation of the 1993 Vienna Plan of Action, and 
issue a Vienna+20 CSO-Declaration.

The Second World Conference on Human Rights was held in Vienna on 14 
to 25 June 1993; and came up with the Vienna Declaration and Program 
of Action. Civil society contributed to the success of this conference 
that was significant in many respects: It emphasized the primacy of 
human rights over all other responsibilities of government. It 
underlined indivisibility and universality of human rights, and 
strengthened the rights of women, children, indigenous peoples. It 
recommended action towards a High Commissioner on Human Rights and 
towards a right to complain against violations of the ICESCR (Optional 
Protocol). 20 years later, there is reason to revive this consensus, 
to rebuild it where necessary and to face the new challenges in an 
environment of multiple crises.

Vienna+20 is an action week – a bundle of conferences and special 
events – following up on the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights on 
June 24-28 and identifying the challenges for the years to come.

A CSO Conference – issuing a CSO-Declaration – will take place on June 
25 and 26. It will be followed by a conference hosted by the Austrian 
government and OHCHR (June 27 and 28).

International Conference "Vienna+20: Advancing the Protection of Human 
Rights"

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

liebe KollegInnen!

"Alle Rechte für Alle" war das Motto der bahnbrechenden Wiener 
Menschenrechtskonferenz im Jahr 1993, mit dem trotz vieler 
Diskussionen erstmals die Universalität der Menschenrechte 
festgeschrieben wurde. 2013 feiern wir das 20. Jubiläum der 
Weltkonferenz, an der über 10.000 VertreterInnen von Regierungen, der 
Vereinten Nationen und der Zivilgesellschaft aus aller Welt 
teilgenommen hatten. Die Konferenz hat entscheidend zur Schaffung 
eines neuen globalen Menschenrechtssystems beigetragen, insbesondere 
durch die Schaffung des Hochkommissariats für Menschenrechte der 
Vereinten Nationen.

Aus diesem Anlass veranstaltet das Bundesministerium für europäische 
und internationale Angelegenheiten in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Büro der 
Hochkommissarin für Menschenrechte der Vereinten Nationen, dem 
Europäischen Trainings- und Forschungszentrum für Demokratie und 
Menschenrechte der Universität Graz und dem Ludwig Boltzmann-Institut 
für Menschenrechte unter dem Titel Vienna+20: Advancing the Protection 
of Human Rights am 27. und 28. Juni 2013 eine hochrangige 
ExpertInnenkonferenz in der Wiener Hofburg. ExpertInnen aus allen 
Teilen der Welt werden zusammenkommen, um auf Basis der 
Errungenschaften der Weltkonferenz 1993 zu diskutieren, wie das 
internationale Menschenrechtssystem weiter gestärkt werden kann.

melden Sie sich/melde dich bitte unbedingt bis spätestens 21. Juni

TeilneherInnenzahl und aus Sicherheitsgründen ist die Anmeldung 
erforderlich.

Rund um die Konferenz organisieren österreichische und internationale 
NGOs von 24. bis 28. Juni 2013 die Aktionswoche Vienna+20 mit einer
