Friedensnobelpreis 2012 an die EU

Protestbrief von Anti-Atom-Initiativen im Oesterreichischen Netzwerk
Atomkraftfrei an das Nobelpreiskomitee in Oslo.

Vorbemerkung:

Atomkraftfrei unterstuetzt (siehe unten!).

Re: Nobel Peace Prize for the European Union and Nuclear Power

Dear Sir or Madam,

we have been surprised by the decision of the Nobel Peace Prize
Committee to award this year’s prize to the European Union. However,
numerous organizations have commented upon the military aspects of the
EU in relation to this award
(www.german-foreign-policy.com/de/fulltext/58434), but one aspect has
so far not been addressed: the radioactive harm the European Union
continues to promote against its citizens and the environment by
promoting nuclear power.

One of the founding contracts of the Union is the Treaty establishing
the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) of 1957. This treaty
ensures the promotion of civilian nuclear power under the false
assumption that nuclear power can be controlled by mankind, or, as the
preamble of the treaty states:

„nuclear energy represents an essential resource for the development
and invigoration of industry and will permit the advancement of the
cause of peace“.

In the last 55 years, this treaty has led to biased subsidies for
“peaceful” nuclear power research and development as well as for
nuclear power plants, no full liability for operators of nuclear
plants as well as tax exemptions, distorting the level playing field
for energy and totally ignoring the insurmountable problem of nuclear
waste that continues to threaten the existence of mankind for hundreds
of thousands of years to come. Also, there is an intrinsic link
between the development of “peaceful” nuclear power plants and the
nuclear weapons programs of some member states that cannot be denied.

The peaceful intentions of the European Union have thus led to harming
its citizens through routine emissions of nuclear power plants in
“normal” operation, through the danger posed by nuclear incidents and
accidents, and through the unresolved problem of nuclear waste. The
problems of nuclear power have most notably exposed by the Chernobyl
catastrophe that polluted 40 % of the surface of the EU above 4000
radioactive decays of Cesium per square meter.

The European Union will only be at peace with its citizens and its
environment when it stops irradiating them – and gives up the pretence
of “peaceful” uses of nuclear power.
The Nobel Peace Prize Committee should thus reconsider awarding the
European Union the prize until the EU has transformed its EURATOM stance.

Yours sincerely
