Bekämpfte Gentechnik

Am 27. November 2005 stimmten in der Schweiz 55,7% für ein - entschärftes - 
Moratorium, das den Import und die Zucht gentechnisch veränderter Pflanzen 
und Tiere für 5 Jahre verbietet. (Der Import von gentechnisch veränderten 
Lebens- und Futtermitteln bleibt leider erlaubt. Siehe Text "Resounding NO 
to GMOs in Europe and Asia" unten)

Im Unterschied dazu ist in Österreich - und in der gesamten EU - eine 
ähnliche Entscheidung nicht EU-gesetzeskonform. Landwirtschaftsminister 
Pröll flüchtet sich daher in eine unverbindliche EU-Konferenz (siehe Info 335).

Vandana Shiva, indische Gentechgegnerin, warnte uns am 29.11.2005 davor, 
dass das WTO-Schiedsgericht den Import von US-Gentech-Nahrungsmittel in die 
EU erzwingt und damit auch die Kennzeichnungspflicht fallen könnte (seihe 
Brief am Ende dieses Infos).

Im "Rundbrief" Nr. 117 (Info 240) berichteten wir über die französischen 
Gentechnikgegner ("Faucheurs volontaires") um José Bové, die 
Gentechpflanzen eliminieren. Er wurde zu 4 Monaten unbedingtem Gefängnis 
verurteilt. Mit den bedingten Vorstrafen müsste er für insgesamt 12 Monate 
ins Gefängnis, will aber trotzdem beim WTO-Gipfel in Hong Kong protestieren.

Weitere 6 Aktivisten wurden in Toulouse zu (teils bedingten) Haftstrafen 
verurteilt: Gérard Onesta, EU-Parlamentarier der Grünen und Noël Mamère, 
(grüner) Bürgermeister von Bègles (Gironde) zu 3 Monaten bedingt. Zu 2 
Monaten bedingt verurteilt wurde der Gründer des "Collectif de faucheurs 
volontaires", Jean-Baptiste Libouban (leitendes Mitglied der 
"Arche-Gemeinschaft") sowie drei Lokal- bzw. Regionalpolitiker (darunter 
der frühere Nationalsekretär der Grünen Gilles Lemaire). Nur ein 
85-jähriger Bauer wurde wegen seines hohen Alters freigesprochen.

Weiters wurden sie zu  100.000 Schadenersatz an die Gentechfirma Pioneer 
verurteilt, der die Unterstützerorganisation "Confederation Paysanne" in

Resounding NO to GMOs in Europe and Asia

In Switzerland, home of the biotech corporation Syngenta, the majority of 
voters this week approved a five-year ban on the farming of genetically 
modified plants and animals. Switzerland's recent ban is one of the 
strictest in Europe. The EU only restricts certain GMO crops for shorter 
time periods. Daniel Ammann, spokesman for the anti-GMO coalition, reported 
that Swiss farmers' organizations unanimously supported the ban. In a 
climate where agriculture is undergoing severe cuts in traditional 
subsidies, farmers see growing organic and non-GMO as a clear alternative. 
"Swiss farming is already very ecologically sound and animal-friendly, and 
farmers are convinced now that with the added label of 'GMO-free', they 
will be able to emphasize the quality of Swiss produce," he said.

Denmark has just been authorized by the EU to reimburse farmers whose crops 
have been contaminated by GMOs. Danish GMO growers will be required to 
contribute to the reimbursement fund. Farmers such as French activist Jose 
Bove have been at the forefront of the European anti-GMO upsurge. Bove was 
sentenced this month to four months in prison for pulling up a field of GMO 
corn planted in France by an Iowa-based biotech company.

Protests against genetic engineering have been increasing all over the 
globe. In October, 17 organizations from Asia called for a global ban on GE 
rice. In the words of Varoonvarn Vangsopakul of Greenpeace, "it poses 
unacceptable risks to health and the environment, as well as people's 
livelihoods."

GMO: Monsanto increases its repression - Call for an increased resistance

On the 26th of November, the Monsanto Corporation (Round-Up, Agent Orange, 
Terminator) seized the bank accounts of the Les Amis de la Confédération 
paysanne France's second largest agriculture trade union. This decision 
follows a judgment after the neutralization, in 1998, of open-air 
cultivations of GM maize and soya.

The Confederation Paysanne is being attacked, even though this action was 
aimed at avoiding genetic pollution and the patenting of the living by 
multinational corporations. "Les Amis de la Confédération paysanne" 
(Friends of the the Confédération paysanne) denounce this repression.

WTO erzwingt Import von US-Gentech-Nahrungsmittel in die EU

Vandana Shiva, indische Gentechgegnerin, warnte uns am 29.11.2005 mit 
folgendem Brief (siehe unten):

Die EU könnte Anfang nächsten Jahres vom WTO-Schiedsgericht dazu verurteilt 
werden, die Einfuhrbeschränkungen gegen über 30 Mais-, Soja- oder 
Ölrapssorten aus der USA aufzuheben. Die EU habe keine ausreichenden 
Beweise vorgelegt, dass diese Gentech-Organismen gesundheits- oder 
umweltschädigend sind. Damit könnte auch die Gentech-Kennzeichnungspflicht 
der EU als Handelshindernis verboten werden. Mit der Bekanntgabe des 
Urteils wollte die WTO bis nach ihrem Gipfel in Hongkong (13. - 19.12.05) 
zuwarten, um absehbare Proteste abzuschwächen. (M.R.)

Dear Friends,

I have just come back from a pre Hong Kong Ministerial Meeting consultation 
organised by our Commerce Ministry and UNCTAD. Supachai*) gave the keynote 
address. In response to one of the questions related to GMO's, he talked 
about the WTO GMO dispute. He said without mentioning countries, that the 
country impeding import has lost.

As you know the WTO is with holding the announcement of the GMO dispute 
between US and Europe till after the WTO Ministerial in order to not create 
problems. Supachai's comments even without naming countries indicate that 
the EU has last. We need to prepare to make the force feeding of GMO's and 
the expansion of Monsanto's monopolies a big issue in Hong Kong especially 
since WTO wants to avoid this. This is even more important given that our 
dear friends in France have been jailed for their GMO action last week.

We are organising a number of events at which we can raise this issue.
