Mein Solidaritätsmail für die gewaltfreien Besetzer des Direktionsbüros der
University of Hawaii (UH) in Honolulu. Der Anlass: Die US-Navy hat mit der
Universitätsverwaltung geheime militärisch-industrielle Forschungsprojekte
(UARC) vereinbart.
Dear friends in and around the UH,
I still remember to my meetings with you and the inspirations I have got
from you - also for our work. By following the national and international
political developments I feel sometimes guilty and helpless - not only
about the political strategies of the Bush-crew, but also about similiar
tendencies and plans in the EU to build up an European military-industrial
complex to "balance" the U.S.-superpower. We are confronted with the
consequences not only in international politics, but also on education,
social and environmental shortcomings and so on.
Let's try to intensify our common solidary struggle for nonvolent
alternatives. Please inform us about your activities and suggestions. We
will keep you informed also.
With solidary greetings
Matthias Reichl
To the
UH Interim President
David McClain
Dear Mr. McClain,
During my visit in May 2002 I had very fruitful contacts with
peace-scientists and -activists working at UH. Therefor I support defending
the peaceful and antimilitaristic direction within the UH and to defend
them against any form of militarization (f.e. the UARC).

Aloha Aina Kakou,
The occupation of Bachman Hall (at the University of Hawaii/ UH in Honolulu)
to stop the UARC military research
center is going well! We have been here at the beautiful Manoa campus
for 27 hours now, with strong voices and a clear resolve to oppose
increased militarization of our homeland.
We are requesting solidarity messages from organizations throughout
Hawaii and the world. The UH administration, in conjunction with
powerful politicians, and the US Navy, is promoting increased
militarization of our university and our home. By now, hundreds of
petitioners have stood up against UARC, and legislators have passed
resolutions, and students and faculty have spoken out countless times.
It's crucial, at this juncture, for the UH adminstration to know that
there is substantial broad public opposition to UARC and the proposed
military research center.
We ask that you please send messages of solidarity and support to us.
You can send them to info at dmzhawaii.org, and we will share your message
with the administration and the press.
We are enclosing our current
public statement so that you can see our talking points. Moreover, our
website (www.stopuarc.info) is available with talking points. Your
assistance will be very important in defeating this classified military
research institute, which will be used to promote militarism and
repression worldwide. We appreciate your help.

Dazu eine Antwort und Stellungnahme des Friedensforschers Glenn D. Paige
aus Honolulu, mit dem wir seit 2002 kooperieren:
April 29, 2005
Aloha Matthias, Mahalo for your strong support. Below letter sent ot both
the Honolulu Advertiser and the Star- Bulletin. Chhers, Glenn
To the Editor:
Amidst continuing militarization of Hawai'i as a strategic base of the
war-fighting United States, the sit-in protesters at Bachman Hall who seek
UH independence from secret Navy research deserve recognition and support
as freedom-fighting defenders of civilian autonomy.
In addition to their own consciences and beliefs they can draw patriotic
inspiration from General-President Eisenhower's 1961 farewell warning for
Americans "to guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence,
whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial
complex." Expressing respect for "the free university, historically the
fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery," he warned, "the
prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by Federal employment,
project allocations, and the power of money is ever present-and is gravely
to be regarded."
The University of Hawai'i needs to clarify and implement in its own
strategic plan the vision of becoming an independent servant of peace not
of war for the people of Hawai'i, the United States, Asia-Pacific, and the
world.
