Der militärisch-akademische Komplex der USA

Die Militarisierung der US-amerikanischen Kultur schreitet zügig voran. Wir 
kennen inzwischen alle die Warnung Präsident Eisenhowers von 1961, der 
militärisch-industrielle Komplex gewinne "ungerechtfertigten Einfluß" in 
den Hallen des Kongresses. Weniger bekannt ist, daß Eisenhower dem Ausdruck 
damals den Begriff "akademisch" hinzufügen wollte; seine Berater redeten es 
ihm aus.

So blieb es dem früheren Senator J. William Fulbright vorbehalten, uns 
später im gleichen Jahrzehnt vor der Militarisierung des Akademischen zu 
warnen, indem er bemerkte, daß "eine Universität ihre höheren Ziele 
verfehlt, wenn sie zu sehr den Aufgaben einer Regierung dient." Der 
Historiker Stuart Leslie hat das Problem als das "goldene Dreieck aus 
Militärbehörden, der High-Tech-Industrie und Forschungsuniversitäten" 
bezeichnet.

Heute besitzen über 350 Bildungsinstitutionen in den USA finanzielle 
Verbindungen zum Pentagon. Mit der Finanzkrise staatlicher und regionaler 
Regierungen wächst die Abhängigkeit von militärischen Geldern für 
Grundlagenforschung und -entwicklung. Seitdem 2004 der Etat des 
Verteidigungsministeriums auf 66 Milliarden US-Dollar in die Höhe schoss 
ist klar, daß das Pentagon jetzt die durchzuführenden Forschungen diktieren 
kann. Das Militär hat lange versucht, Einfluß auf zivile 
Kulturinstitutionen von der akademischen Welt bis Hollywood zu nehmen und 
auszuweiten, und seine heutigen massiven Geldmittel machen seine Macht 
zunehmend unwiderstehlich.

Ein Beispiel ist das Kommando für Weltraum- und Seekriegsführungssysteme 
(Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command = SPAWAR), das "Beziehungen zu 
Universitäten" entwickelt hat, um diesen "eine exzellente 
Rekrutierungsquelle" für hochkalibrige Studenten zu bieten. SPAWAR hat 
Zusammenarbeitsabkommen mit folgenden Universitäten, die sich übrigens alle 
in den "roten" Staaten des "Bush Country" befinden: Clemson University, 
University of South Carolina, The Citadel, North Carolina State University, 
Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, University of Central Florida, North Carolina 
A & T State University.

Um nicht zurückzustehen hat das Weltraumkommando der Luftwaffe im Oktober 
2004 mit einem Konsortium von Universitäten, die die Bildungs- und 
Forschungsbedürfnisse des Kommandos unterstützen wollen, eine 
Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet.

In dieser Erklärung wird die University of Colorado in Colorado Springs als 
leitende Universität im "Weltraum-Bildungskonsortium" eingesetzt, um einen 
"zukünftigen Weltraumkader für die Luftwaffe" zu entwickeln. Die Luftwaffe 
will über 10 000 Mitglieder für diesen Kader ausbilden - Wissenschaftler, 
Ingenieure, Programm-Manager und Weltraum-Systemtechniker - um die Vision 
der USA von Kontrolle und Dominierung des Weltraums in den kommenden Jahren 
zu verwirklichen.

Das Konsortium umfasst die University of Colorado-Boulder, die George 
Washington University, die University of Central Florida, die Johns Hopkins 
University, die Aerospace Corporation und die Space Foundation. Es gibt 
auch Pläne, noch mehr "Luftfahrtgesellschaften" in das Konsortium zu bringen.

Die Firma Northrop Grumman hat kürzlich ein Fünf-Jahres-Abkommen mit der 
Penn State University über Forschung und Entwicklung von fortgeschrittenen 
militärischen Elektroniksytemen abgeschlossen. Die Universität arbeitet set 
mehr als einem Jahrzehnt mit der Rüstungsfirma zusammen.

Occupation of  (US-)Senator's Office over Iraq (war).

Today I joined with 16 other peace activists from Mid-coast and Southern 
Maine as we occupied the Portland office of Sen. Olympia Snowe (Republican) 
for five hours.

People representing Peace Action Maine and Veterans for Peace sat in the 
office of Sen. Snowe and read the names of 1,440 American soldiers who have 
died in Iraq.  In addition we read the names of an equal number of Iraqi 
civilians who have been killed since the start of the U.S. invasion and 
occupation.  (We were not sure if we would be arrested but three of us were 
determined to stay even if threatened with arrest.  As it turned out we 
were not threatened with arrest.)

As we entered the office one of our group read a prepared statement to the 
staff of Sen. Snowe.  The statement included the following:

We oppose the U.S. war in Iraq because we first feel that it is an illegal 
war that was sold to the public based on a lie.  It has led to mass chaos 
and even the CIA has reported in recent weeks that the situation is 
worsening and will continue to do so.

We call on Sen. Snowe to speak out now against the war by calling for a cut 
in funding for the war and to bring all U.S. troops home 
immediately.  Growing numbers of American oppose the war (50% think it was 
a mistake to send troops to Iraq, Gallup Poll January 12).  The cost of the 
war (over $5 billion per month) is leading to huge debt in the U.S. and 
will ultimately help to cripple the U.S. economy.

We remind the senator that human needs programs like education, health 
care, home heating assistance, public transportation, and child care will 
have to be cut in order to pay for the quagmire in Iraq.

We respectfully request a statewide public meeting with the senator at her 
earliest convenience so that people in the community can raise their 
heartfelt concerns with her.

Two local Portland-area TV stations and two local radio stations gave 
extensive coverage to the protest.  This was the second such office 
occupation that the two groups have now organized.  Last month 13 people 
held an occupation of Maine's other Republican Senator, Susan Collins, and 
read names of American and Iraqi dead.  In March, the groups intend to hold 
a similar occupation of Rep Tom Allen's (D-ME) office.  While Allen voted 
against the war he has been reluctant to publicly show strong leadership 
against the current occupation and the massive wasteful expenditures of tax 
dollars in Iraq.
